....................................................................................................................................................................... July 27th 2004 - Silverstone International race report (24/25th July) Thankfully we had a relatively dry weekend again. We drove down on Thursday arriving at Silverstone around 11:00pm. We had two test sessions on the Friday to familiarise ourselves with the International circuit. Qualifying was at the relatively reasonable time of 10:30 on Saturday morning. Colin qualified 4th with a time of 1min 38.374 and I had a time of 1min 39.358 putting me back down in 13th! Although my lap timer recorded a 1min 38.1 when I queried this with the timekeepers they explained that because they time from the start finish line and the beacon for my timer was down at the end of the pit lane it is entirely possible to have vastly different timings shown. However, I was encouraged that I would have good race pace. Race 1 on Saturday saw Colin retain 4th place and I managed to only lose one place on the rolling start. After this I managed to pass several cars and witnessed several more exit the track of their own accord. I was able to catch the group that Colin was in and made a pass to take 5th place on the last lap. I was then right behind Colin as we went in to Luffield for the final time when I overcooked it into this corner and (possibly aided by incorrect toe settings on my front suspension) simply bounce-understeered off into the gravel. Bugger!! Colin suggested re-instating my old moniker (Dave "GT" Colville i.e. Gravel Trap), much to his own amusement ... Race 2 on Sunday and the first start saw me come from 26th on the grid to be battling with Fiona Leggate on lap 2 (who started from 13th) only for the race to be red-flagged. First time I've managed to make a decent rolling start and it ended due to a major accident involving 3 MG TF's. Andy Whitmore's TF was the worst damage although he was really an innocent victim. On the restart, I still made a decent getaway, but was unable to pass as many cars as on the first start, however, I made a decent charge and ended up 13th overall. Colin dropped a couple of places, but had a real battle to keep Mark Roberts behind him and hold out for 6th place. All in all a pretty enjoyable race weekend. Although I didn't get the results I felt capable of, I certainly had fun passing a lot of cars and learned a lot of useful tips for next time at Silverstone International.
June 9th 2004 - Spa race report (5th & 6th June) Well, we came, we saw, but we didn't quite manage to conquer! We arrived in Belgium on Thursday morning (courtesy of Superfast Rosyth/Zeebrugge ferry - excellent!). We drove down to the circuit and arrived at approx. 4:30pm local time. We got set up and readied the cars, then had a few glasses of wine to relax. Next day, we had a half hour testing session at 12:30 local time. Unfortunately, it had rained pretty heavily, so this wasn't a great opportunity to really explore the track. Saturday morning qualifying was on a wet, but slowly drying track. We, along with the majority of the field elected to go out on wets, but by the end of the session, there was a clear dry line around most of the circuit. Wets do seem to still grip pretty well even in those conditions. However, the really smart guys had gone for slicks. Colin and I did not qualify too well (Colin was 14th with a time of 3m09.398. I was 16th with a time of 3m11.374, but I had my best lap of 3m09.456 deleted for running wide on the exit of one corner!!). Colin made a great start in the actual race in dry, but overcast conditions. I bogged it down and lost out to a TF behind me, but we both managed to scrap our way forward to make some places. I ended up 12th, while Colin made it up to 8th. Sundays race and again Colin had a good start. This time so did I, gaining 3 places before we started the climb through Eau Rouge. As I came round the double apex off camber left hander coming down the other side of the track, I was greeted with Chris Dewing sideways across the middle of the track, with Colin going round the outside of him. Unfortunately, Colin got onto the kerb on the outside and also span. Thankfully, there was enough of a gap for me to squeeze by and carry on. Colin dropped back to 16th at this point. I was now up to 6th, with a gap of somewhere around 5 seconds to the leaders. For the next few laps I gained a little on the leaders then made a mistake at one of the corners around the back of the circuit, locking up badly and almost throwing it away. That lost me a couple of seconds and brought me back into the clutches of Rob Oldaker, from whom I had to defend strongly for the last couple of laps, but I managed to retain 6th place. Colin scrapped his way back through the field and managed to grab 10th place. I can't emphasise enough just what an amazing track Spa is. For both Eau Rouge and the last corner before the bus stop chicane it is entirely possible to be flat in 5th gear, probably approaching 120mph. The cars were just fantastic around these faster corners, although we both suffered with serious understeer around some of the slower parts of the circuit. Colin was awarded driver of the day for his Saturday performance and we both managed to get well below 3 minute lap times, which can't be bad when you consider that we were still very much learning the circuit on both Saturday and Sunday! Watch out for video and pics from Spa soon ....
May 19th - 2004 MG Mayflower Race Dates & Venues are as follows :- 10th
April – Silverstone National
Colin and I arrived at Silverstone around lunchtime on Friday 9th April in the new two-car transporter we acquired to carry our new MG ZR's. With nothing much to do, we had a lazy day and ended the evening with a few glasses of wine and an early night. The cars were delivered to the circuit early on the Saturday morning fully prepared with our transponders and filled with fuel!! Qualifying was wet, but not flooded, so we were out on the Dunlop control wets. Although I had been quicker in the wet when we tested the previous Monday, Colin outpaced me and qualified a magnificent 6th (which he originally thought was near the back, as the grid sheet was upside down!). I qualified a disappointing 11th, with a time that was slower than I'd managed on the Monday. Overall though, not bad out of 29 cars entered. The race itself was dry, so we each put new slicks on the front and some well worn slicks on the back. The Mayflower Trophy have adopted rolling starts for this year, so we headed out on our green flag lap and formed up on the grid. As we followed the pace car round for the flying lap we kept our stations until the red lights on the start finish straight went out, then we accelerated as hard as possible. I got jumped by two MG TF's on the start (one either side, though I can't believe they didn't go before the lights went...), however, Colin made a much better start and made it up to 4th. Just like XR2's the midfield is not a good place to be, so I was immediately involved in some fairly fierce tussles. Colin kept in the lead group and gave a very good account of himself until a wheel banging incident on lap 5 left him with a punctured left front tyre and he was obviously forced to retire. What actually happened was that the spokes of the other cars wheel sliced the valve on his tyre! New shorty valves required for the next race then ... I also had a coming together with one of the TF's around lap 3, which was a much heavier contact (racing incident of course), which resulted in the TF spinning out and me having a rearranged wing and door. After this I had a race long battle with one of the other ZR's while gaining a few places. We had equivalent pace, but I was faster at some parts of the circuit and he was faster on others. Good clean race though and we kept this up for the remainder of the race. The only other notable incident was when I came into Copse (blind right hander after the start finich straight) carrying a little too much speed and powerslid all the way round (in typical XR2 style - foot buried to the floor willing the car to pull itself out of the tailend slide). This was actually to my benefit as the cars immediately behind obviously backed off expecting the worst and I gained a little space. I eventually finished up in 8th place and was subsequently awarded a nice glass tankard for MG Mayflower Trophy "driver of the day". Not sure if this was for spectacular slides or a sympathy prize for having driven so far to take part, but it was a nice gesture anyway. In summary, it was a good experience and the cars are simply fantastic to drive, with 185 ponies, LSD's and slicks adding up to a very fun package.
March 27th 2004 - Colin Robertson and Dave Colville have acquired two MG ZR's fully prepared for the MG Mayflower Trophy series. First race will be at Silverstone on Saturday 10th April. Stewart Scott and Andrew Martin will continue to contest the Scottish XR Challenge. Colin Robertson's front running car is for sale (contact details on home page). |
